CHAPTER 23

Spreckles, normally calm, reserved, and collected, paced back and forth in his office while Lenny lurked beside the doorway, watching.

Anger and fear battled inside the director, and he ground his teeth together, trying to shove the emotions down. They were unbefitting of a man of his position. He needed to keep a cool head and think this through.

He spun on his heel and took quick, clipped steps across the plush rug toward Lenny.

“It has become imperative that we locate Zoe Bennett. I want all the men and dogs we have available to us out searching. Call in more workers for overtime if needed.”

“Just the forest?” Lenny clarified.

The director's nostrils flared. It was a fair question. Miss Bennett had been missing for days.

Spreckles pursed his lips, lacing his hands together behind his back. “Our property is set deep in a dense forest, and the girl is rather small. It's unlikely that she's made it far, so yes, let us concentrate our search on the forest. Though I shall reach out to any law enforcement associates we may be friendly with back in her hometown of Boise, just in case she managed to get back there.”

Lenny merely nodded, his eyes narrowed above his crooked nose. His brawn was much more evident than his brains, though Spreckles suspected most people underestimated Lenny's intellect. The man was hardly loquacious, but he followed directions expertly and had the common sense not to speak more than was necessary.

Spreckles thought on it another minute. “Let us also recruit any of the level four yellow shirts. The students ought to be trusted well enough to search for her as well.”

“Done,” Lenny grunted in his deep voice.

“We need to find the girl. With the police looking deeper into this, I fear she might be our undoing. Finding Zoe Bennett is the key to keeping this from spiraling out of control.”
